Lending a Helping Hand

If you attended our annual July Jubilee (the best Fourth of July and fireworks celebration on the lake!), you might have noticed some extra boys and girls in blue. While our police officers were out in force working the event, another valuable team from the Little Elm Police Department was working alongside officers - almost 30 volunteers from the Citizens On Patrol program (COPS).

The Little Elm Citizens on Patrol are trained volunteer drivers and graduates of previous Little Elm Citizens Police Academy classes.

Their objective, as non-confrontational and unarmed volunteers, is to be extra eyes and ears for the Little Elm Police Department. As an observational patrol, they drive throughout town neighborhoods and local businesses at various times of the day and night, reporting suspicious activity to the LEPD.

At this year's July Jubilee - the first for the COPS program - volunteers worked in a wide range of capacities, from helping put identification bracelets on kids, offering guidance on event and park rules, shuttling volunteers to their posts, and answering questions.

Another critical role played by the COPS volunteers at the event was reuniting lost children with their parents.

"In one instance, a volunteer noticed a kid needed help to find mom and dad and they brought them to the Police Information booth as public safety worked to locate their parents," said Sergeant Marcus Maxie, who serves as the department's Community Liaison.

As part of his role, Maxie also oversees the COPS program, developed out of the Citizens Police Academy, a 14-week course that gives participants insight, hands-on experience and education about the police department.
