The Texas Education Agency has released the 2019 accountability ratings for public schools. Little Elm ISD received a “B” letter grade, based on the state’s year-old A-F Public School Accountability System.
“Although we are extremely pleased to see Little Elm ISD improve from a “C” to a “B” in just one year, we believe a single letter grade in no way provides parents and community members with a true representation of the opportunities we are providing students at Little Elm ISD,” said Daniel Gallagher, superintendent.
After the release of last school year’s accountability rating, Gallagher led the charge to have an outside and independent curriculum audit performed. In the fall of 2018, the Board of Trustees approved the funding for the audit, and after four months of taking a deep look, the 260-page audit revealed areas where the District needed to improve its educational program.
Prior to the release of the audit, the Curriculum and Learning team had already begun working on areas of improvement, including creating an extensive curriculum management plan. This plan provides a systematic approach to ensure the use of District resources are prioritized to support student achievement and growth.
“While this was being developed, we had a strong focus on curriculum and learning across the District. We wanted to be sure our students were receiving the learning they need to be successful,” said Gallagher. “Our teachers and administrators have done an exceptional job of creating an environment of high expectations and focus on results at each of our campuses.”
A great example of this improvement is happening at Lakeside Middle School. LMS has improved its overall rating from a “D” to a “C” in just one year as a result of the clear focus on improving student learning. In addition to LMS, Little Elm High School has also improved its overall rating from a “C” to a “B” with a primary focus on college, career, and military readiness.
“We still have a lot of work to do, but I believe we are making progress toward our common goal and that’s providing a great education for our kids. It is the hard work of our teachers, staff, and campus leaders who are moving the needle for the progress we are seeing in the District,” said Gallagher.
Additionally, two campuses received a Distinction Designation: Little Elm High School received a Distinction Designation in Academic Achievement in Science and Prestwick received a Distinction Designation in Top 25%: Comparative Closing the Gaps. Distinction Designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of a similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
