Little Elm ISD has partnered with the Town of Little Elm Fire Department and North Central Texas College to provide a Fire Science Program for students at Little Elm High School beginning in the 2019-2020 school year. These courses will help develop students’ knowledge about firefighter safety, rules, and regulations.

“We have created an additional class under the Law, Public Safety, Security, and Corrections pathway for our students at Little Elm High School,” said Ryan Contreras, Career and Technical Education coordinator. “Currently, we offer law and medical terminology principles classes and we have about 100 students enrolled. But we know we have a growing interest in the number of students who are interested in a career in firefighting and by providing a Fire Science program will give our students more opportunities.”

The Fire Science Program offered to students at LEHS will be taught by NCTC instructors who are trained and certified firefighters. Students can earn up to 33 dual credit toward an associate’s of Applied Arts Degree from NCTC. Student can also earn a Texas Commission on Fire Protection Certification and the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Certification while enrolled in the program.

“If you think about the North Texas region and how fast it’s growing in population, this profession of public safety is in high demand,” said Dr. Tony Tipton, executive director for Marketing and Community Partnerships. “The fact that we are also working with the Little Elm Fire Department not only allows our students to learn from our local experts, but it gives our students a chance to have real-world experiences with professionals as they explore a career in firefighting.”

A parent information night is planned for Wednesday, February 13 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. inside the LEHS Cafeteria. Interested sophomores who will be juniors next school year are encouraged to attend with their parents.
