The Little Elm ISD Board of Trustees called a special public meeting Monday evening to review a list of potential names for the two new middle schools and the transportation facility.
After careful consideration, the Board voted and approved the names for the three new buildings. First, the Board selected Little Elm ISD Transportation Facility, which will house our buses and operations department.
"On behalf of the Little Elm ISD Board of Trustees, I am excited to announce the names of the two new middle schools," said Daniel Gallagher, superintendent. "The first new middle school, which will replace Lakeside Middle School, will be named Jerry R. Walker Middle School. Walker Middle School will be located off of Eldorado Parkway in between French Settlement Drive and Dickson Lane."
The campus is named after Detective Jerry R. Walker who lost his life in January of 2017 while protecting the community where he lived and served.
Detective Walker served as a school resource officer at Little Elm High school for several years. He participated in many events in the District and served the students, staff, and teachers.
"He made a tremendous impact on our entire community with his dedication and service," said Gallagher.
The second middle school, which will be located on Lebanon Road in The Colony, will be named after former superintendent Dr. Lowell H. Strike.
"When Dr. Strike came to our District three years ago, he brought his wealth of experience and knowledge. He changed the culture and direction of the District in a very short period of time.
If you’ve ever had the opportunity to speak to Dr. Strike, you would quickly realize that every decision he made was for our kids," added Gallagher. "He truly cared about each student and valued the highest quality of character among our staff."
Dr. Strike retired in December of 2017.
"Naming these schools after Detective Walker and Dr. Strike aligns with our core values and I cannot think of a better way to honor two incredible leaders and heroes who made a difference in the lives of others. I want to thank the community for taking the time to participate in the process," said Gallagher.
The two new middle school are scheduled to open for the 2020-2021 school year. The Little Elm ISD Transportation Facility is scheduled to open in 2019.
