For the first time in Little Elm ISD, seven Chavez Elementary students, called the “Power of 7,” have advanced to Global Finals after competing at the state Destination Imagination, or DI, tournament held in Mansfield ISD over the weekend.
Global Finals is the world’s largest celebration of creativity through DI and to advance to this level is a highly competitive task. “Power of 7,” is a team made of six fifth-graders and one fourth-grader. They are the only team to advance to state level since DI was brought to the District three years ago.
Out of the 18 elementary teams that competed in Treasure!, an improvisational challenge, the “Power of 7” earned third place securing them a spot at Global Finals. The improvisational challenge is all about spontaneity and storytelling as teams receive topics on cultures and explorers and must produce a skit right on the spot in front of a panel of appraisers.
The team also earned highest in the Instant Challenge out of 37 competing teams. DI competitive team challenges range from technical, scientific, engineering, improvisational, fine arts, and service learning.
Global Finals are in Knoxville, TN, where more than 1,400 of the top-scoring DI teams from 45 states and 14 countries gather in one place to showcase their innovative Challenge solutions. Each year, more than 17,000 people attend this event.
