Thursday morning, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) released its tentative Volleyball, Basketball, and Football District Assignments and Reclassification information. For the first time in history, Little Elm football will play in a separate district than LEISD's other sports. Little Elm football will be Region 2, Division 1 in District 5-5A with Frisco ISD: Centennial, Heritage, Independence, Liberty, Lone Star, Wakeland; and The Colony. "This is the first time 5A football is separated by Division I and II based on high school enrollment numbers. Division I is 1,840-2,189 and Division II is 1,150-1,839. Little Elm falls within Division I because it's considered a large conference 5A school," explained Sandra Howell, Little Elm ISD Athletic Director.
Not only is that a first for UIL, but a first for the Little Elm football program. They will be playing in a district that is separate from all the other sports, like volleyball and basketball. Here is the breakdown:
Lobo Football will be in Region 2, Division I in District 5-5A with Frisco ISD: Centennial, Heritage, Independence, Liberty, Lone Star, Wakeland; and The Colony.
Lobo Boys/Girls Basketball and Volleyball will be in Region I in District 8-5A with Denton ISD: Braswell, Denton, Ryan; Lake Dallas, Northwest, and The Colony.
All other Individual and spring sport alignments will be released in March.
Organizational meetings for both new districts will take place later in February and March.
"Overall, this is a strong and competitive district. When you look at the district classifications for football, District 5 and District 6 will match up in the first round of playoffs. That's going to be tough competition against Highland Park who has won two consecutive state championship games. It will be exciting," said Howell.
