Cookie celebrations are the best. But a cookie etched out in icing with the name of the university you've just been accepted to makes the celebration that much sweeter. Three Little Elm High School students, Chelsea Chang, Dylan McAden, and Cassidy Davis were the newcomers to a "admitted student reception" for all students who have already been admitted into Texas Tech University. The event was hosted by TTU held inside LEHS. This was TTU's third straight year to hold an "Instant Decision Day" where students are accepted into the University on the spot, after meeting eligibility requirements.
"We really look forward to this event every year," said Rex Oliver, Assistant Director of Recruitment at Texas Tech Office of Undergraduate Admissions. "It's a great feeling to see the faces of the students as we submit their transcripts to our office in Lubbock through our scanner and then witness their excitement as our office in Lubbock sends back the admitted information! Watching those students open their acceptance letter on the spot is the best," he said.
Students were mesmerized by the event. Senior Chelsea Chang said it still has not hit her that she's been accepted into Tech. "The whole experience just felt so surreal. The fact that I got to see the admissions offices in person was such an amazing experience that you just can't get anywhere else," said Chang.
District College Readiness Coordinator, Keisha Brown, is the one to thank for such an event. A TTU alum, and someone who has formally worked in a university admissions office, Brown's connections run deep. She coordinated the first Instant Decision Day with TTU three years ago, making it a first event for TTU to host at a Texas high school. "This is a very proud moment for me, to be able to offer a program like this to our students. Other students in the area don't have the opportunity to show up at school with their transcript in hand and go home with their acceptance letter. Currently we have scheduled Texas Woman's University and Midwestern State University to hold Instant Decision Days later in the semester," explained Brown.
